As part of Assign One I thought I'd do a quick survey of members of the HS School Community (this thought occurred one morning at about 2:30am when I was in yet another state of panic!)
Basically I asked similiar questions of the Principal, TL, C'rm Tchrs and Students. I realised afterwards that I'd left out the Parents- oops!!
Summary of results:
STRENGTHS
* Lots of print media found in the library.
* TL has extensive knowledge of what is in the library, how it links to curric & where it can be located.
* TL is organised and follows through with requests for resources
* Aesthetically pleasing environment
* Lunchtime Library
CHALLENGES
* Ltd availability and use of digital or visual resources in library.
* Lots of outdated resoucres no longer allealing or relevant to student learning leading to overcrowded shelves in resource room.
* Ltd collaboration with tchrs.
* Traditional library lessons.
* Administration work has increased resulting in reduction of teaching time.
The overwhelming impression I now have is that a TLs' job is not an easy one and the different hats he/she often wears within a school often go unnoticed. Oberg (2006) suggests that TLs can suffer from "occupational invisibility" because by the very nature of their role they direct, guide and "empower" others to learn. Furthermore( as is the case at HS) the physical location of the library being separate from the main c'rms can often contribute to a TLs' feeling of isolation from the school community.
I find myself wondering at times if I have bitten off more than I can chew.
